An area consisting of two separate sub-blocks located ~50 km north-east and east of Burra has been explored for possible economic buried marine placer heavy mineral (HM) sand deposits. The target strata comprised littoral marine sediments of the Pliocene aged Loxton - Parilla Sand (LPS), in particular, relict strandline horizons that elsewhere in the basin commonly host placer deposits of HM sand. This beach facies unit is often very well developed, with a well defined foreshore - surf zone - lowershore regressive sequence. The best HM accumulations manifest themselves within the foreshore beds within this unit. In two reconnaissance RC aircore traverse drilling campaigns conducted during licence Year 1, in June-July and September-October 2013, a total of 34 vertical open holes were drilled by Iluka along eighteen short traverses for a total penetration of 2089 m; some of these traverses forming the western ends of longer drill traverses which are located mainly on Iluka's adjoining licences. No significant HM mineralisation was encountered, and most of the holes did not intersect significant thicknesses of Tertiary marine sands. Four holes recorded minor, 2-9 m thick intercepts of fine to very fine grained, clayey fluvio-lacustrine Pooraka Formation sands carrying an average of 1% HM, but also a high proportion of slimes. Because of the newly perceived downgraded HM potential of this licence area, Iluka decided in December 2013 to fully surrender it.
