Afmeco Mining and Exploration Pty Ltd is exploring for possible economic sedimentary uranium mineralisation which may have formed within permeable sand units of the Tertiary Callabonna Sub-basin. The subject ELs 4317 and 4318 are part of 7-licence tenement package known as the Curnamona Project which is wholly held by Afmeco. Both licence areas, which have never previously been explored for uranium, adjoin the other project tenements (EL 4234, EL 4235, EL 4236, EL 4477 and EL 4229) on their southern side, and the whole tenement package thereby covers all of the basinal region south and south-west of Lake Frome. Afmeco considered that this region holds good potential for discovering deposits of ‘palaeochannel type’ uranium mineralisation, according to geological and geophysical evidence revealed by previous drilling which the company had conducted during 2007 and 2008 on adjacent licences. During the first year of both subject ELs, no field work was undertaken, but Native Title land access negotiations were progressed to the signing of an agreement on 20/8/2010, and environmental and heritage protection clearances were sought. It was planned to acquire a reconnaissance airborne EM survey before performing scout vertical rotary mud drilling in both licence areas. Because the adverse impact of the Global Financial Crisis became a critical factor during the second licence year (2010-2011), Afmeco undertook no field work then either, but instead started negotiations for setting up a large, strategic joint venture partnership to provide funds to allow exploration to continue within ELs 4317 and 4318 and the rest of the Curnamona Project.
