An area situated adjacent to the recently defined Andamooka Opalfield, and located about 20 miles north of Andamooka township centre, has been explored for possible economic occurrences of opal or base metals within Cretaceous and Precambrian strata respectively. One inch to one mile geological mapping, based on aerial photographs, was done to map all Cretaceous bedrock exposures, and ground magnetic and scintillometric surveys were run along a 5000 foot grid, with readings taken every 500 feet. Due to extensive cover of Recent sand dunes in the licence area, the nature of the concealed bedrock was deduced by examining the spoils from the many wells and dams excavated there. A single trench was dug through the sand cover into Cretaceous sandstone 1 mile south of Bulls Head Dam. The sand proved to be 24 feet thick, and the 5 feet of sandstones that were exposed did not show any signs of opal-bearing horizons. Further costeaning was decided against on the grounds of unacceptable cost. Nine locations were profiled with the geophysics. The maximum variation in magnetometer readings was 1000 gammas, with a peak value of 14,500 gammas recorded at Overhead Dam; scintillometer readings ranged between 15 and 25 counts per second. In view of the absence of any significant mineralisation at surface, and the poor geophysical response from shallowly buried bedrock, it was recommended that no further work be done.
