Three contiguous areas centred ~50-80 km east of Tailem Bend, and reaching close to the SA-Vic. State border, have been explored for possible economic buried Tertiary marine placer heavy mineral sand (HMS) deposits that may have been formed within the Murray Basin sedimentary succession, as winnowed strandings that were deposited along Late Miocene to Late Pliocene regressive shorelines. The tenements straddle the Pinnaroo Block, a structural high bordered by the Murrayville and Hamley faults to the north and the Morgan to the west. The Pinnaroo Block was uplifted in the Late Pliocene, thereby damming the Murray River to form Lake Bungunnia. The Blanchetown Clay which became deposited in Lake Bungunnia is present within the subject CBD area. Tectonics and uplift are thought to play a very important part in the development of many of the mineral sands deposits in the Murray Basin, e.g. West Balranald and Nepean are located adjacent to or straddle the Iona Ridge, Snapper and Ginkgo straddle the Pooncarie Ridge, and the Euston strands straddle or are adjacent to the Neckarboo Ridge. Faulting in the southern part of the Pinnaroo Block that was contemporaneous with mineral sands deposition is believed to have caused multiple transgressive and regressive periods of sand deposition, which may have led to the development of stacked mineralised bodies. This is evidenced by the Mindarie group of HMS deposits, which are along strike of the CBD tenements. A single exploratory/stratigraphic RC aircore drilling campaign was completed by the licensee during October 2012, when 50 vertical NQ open holes were completed along six traverses for a total penetration of 2496 m, and 533 selected drill samples were laboratory assayed. Three of the drill targets comprised aeromagnetic anomalies that had been identified in data from a previous HMS explorer's (Renison Gold Corp. - RGC) 1998 airborne magnetic survey. Ten holes were drilled by Iluka across these anomalies at an ~80 m hole collar separation, so as not to overstep a WRP - sized deposit having widths of around 100-120 m, while the majority of holes tested regional stratigraphic targets at much wider spacing in places where there had been little to no previous drilling, or where aeromagnetic data were unavailable or appeared to be distorted by basement signatures. Minor accumulations of mineral sands (36 m of Loxton-Parilla sands. Drilling was terminated in either the surf zone or lower shoreface facies of this last-named unit. It was concluded that the potential for the three subject licences to host any high value HMS deposit that would match Iluka Resources' business requirements had been fully tested by that company and by RGC's former work. Consequently it was decided to fully surrender all of the tenements.
