A licence area which originally covered 305 square km of the central Flinders Ranges east of Leigh Creek has recently undergone two reductions in size, including a first partial relinquishment of 115.7 square km (37.9%) made on 19/12/ 2013 as per the terms of the Flinders Ranges Project tenement group's 2012 Amalgamated Expenditure Agreement (AEA), and a second partial relinquishment of 108 square km (57%) made on 2/6/2014 as per the terms of the 2013 AEA renewal period. The relinquished portions of ground have been explored for economic base metal mineralisation that might have formed within Late Proterozoic to Middle Cambrian continental rift margin sediments, probably with syngenetic origins; later, it is believed that these proto-deposits became remobilised into particular stratigraphic and structural settings. The target fertile metasediments of the Arrowie Basin consist of an Early to Middle Cambrian succession overlying Neoproterozoic rocks of the northern Adelaide Geosyncline. The basin margins are defined by regional north-west and north-east aligned basement structures. These structures were present at the onset of Neoproterozoic sedimentation and controlled the sediment thickness distribution within the basin. During the Delamerian Orogeny (~500 Ma), the structures were re-activated as thrust faults during regional north – south shortening. The shortening caused zones of extension to form along existing north – south structures close to the basin margin, providing a locus for mineralisation. Significant zinc mineralisation exists within the carbonate sequences of the Early Cambrian Hawker Group, most notably the fossil-rich Wilkawillina Limestone. Mineralisation is most pronounced on the margins of the basin where the strata thin near major regional structures (i.e. the Norwest Fault). The Beltana – Aroona trend is located in such a setting and is characterised by complexly deformed carbonate sequences hosting zinc silicate (willemite) mineralisation. The now relinquished parts of EL 4622 are deemed by Perilya as being less prospective because there the bedrock strata consist almost exclusively of Proterozoic siliclastic rocks and quartzites. Owing to this, no field work has been conducted on this ground. The only exploration activities were an office-based geological data compilation and the purchase of regional Aster multispectral satellite imagery to inspect for signatures of carbonate rock outcrops and possible hydrothermal alteration. No prominent spectral reflectance or absorption features could be identified which might require ground follow-up. The history of previous exploration is minimal, amount to sparse coverage by regional stream sediment geochemical sampling. Only restricted and very low order incoherent base metal anomalism was detected.
