A small area located ~90 km east-northeast of Port Augusta has been explored for possible economic Tertiary lignitic coal deposits that may have formed in the northern part of a now uplifted, ~50 km long x ~15 km wide intramontane sedimentary basin, the Walloway Basin, as well as for any other presumed higher rank brown coal accumulation that could perhaps be present at depth there within a concealed remnant Triassic basin, i.e. one similar to the known buried coal occurrences in the Springfield and Boolcunda basins located 55 km to the west. During the first licence year, activity comprised making a detailed review of previous geoscientific records, including assessing available hydrological and geophysical data, followed by the acquisition of a ground gravity survey to map basinal structures. Most of EL 4540 was profiled by 12 variably spaced and aligned survey lines traversed along station tracks and fencelines, using a 500 m station interval (163 stations read). Over the ensuing three years of tenure, no more work was done before a decision was made to fully surrender the licence.
