Exploration for possible economic base metal sulphides hosted within a 10 square mile block of Carpentarian basement schists and gneiss, or within adjoining younger Adelaidean metasedimentary cover rocks, in an area located just north and west of Manna Hill on the Barrier Highway, has consisted of detailed 1:12,000 scale mapping, geochemical sampling and several line miles of VLF EM profiling of selected prospects identified from ground inspection and regional stream sediment sampling. Mineralised ironstone-quartz veins carrying up to 0.3% Cu were found at the historic Morialpa prospect near the homestead of that name: the largest veins are up to 1200 feet long but only up to 2 feet wide, and appear to thin out at shallow depth in the old mine shafts. The VLF EM profiles run here could not resolve any definite EM conductors within the Carpentarian mica schist country rocks. At the nearby Morialpa Quartz Reef prospect, grab sampling showed that 650-700 ppm Cu is present in the reef in association with haematite-limonite breccias and concretions. Here also the ground EM method was unable to delineate significant conductors relating to the host fault zone at the margin of the basement inlier. The drilling of test shallow percussion holes to 60 or 70 feet vertical depth was recommended for both of these prospects, two holes for the former and one at the latter. A promising occurrence of unworked primary and secondary copper mineralisation was discovered at the Trojan prospect within the Manna Hill Goldfield, outcropping over a 500 foot strike length and carrying up to 9.1% Cu plus 5 oz/t Ag in narrow quartz-ironstone veins. Here it was recommended that three percussion drillholes be put down to beneath the water table at about 100 feet depth, to investigate the potential of a moderately strong west-plunging EM conductor.
