Appraisal drilling of the previously defined south-eastern portion of the Wintinna Coal Deposit was undertaken by the licensee to try to better determine in situ resources of Permian sub-bituminous coal which might potentially be useable for coal seam methane generation. The drilling programme's initial aim was to validate the previously inferred extent of coal seam occurrence within the subject EL 4795 and the company's adjoining EL 4799 to the south and west. A secondary objective was to assess coal quality and obtain reliable measurements of the in situ coal density. Only one of three attempted drillholes, KC001, was completed successfully to sample the principal target, the so-called Arckaringa coal seam, being vertically rotary drilled to TD 276 m during early June 2012. The other two holes were abandoned while attempting to set surface casing in collapsing Quaternary alluvial gravels. Based on interpretation of drill sample returns and later-run downhole geophysical logs, the narrow but significant Perentie, Goorikiana, Marackina (upper and lower splits) and Mount Barry coal seams were intersected within the depth interval 170 - 217m. Several thin (1.0 m thick is 8.3 m, which increases to 10.2 m if the Mirakina 1 and Nikinna 2 are added. These numbers are compatible with pre-drill model predictions. However if the apparent trend in declining thickness for the Arckaringa seam is confirmed, the size of the geological target that warrants investigation could become appreciably reduced as additional drilling is undertaken. Based on an average seam thickness of 5 m over an area of 19 square km, and using an assumed in situ coal density of 1.35 g/cubic cm, T. Bradbury of GEOS Mining Consultants has suggested that the portion of the Arckaringa seam present in the north-eastern part of EL 4795 could contain an exploration target of 90-100 Mt of coal. No further work, including any resumption of the aborted Phase 1 of the planned appraisal drilling programme, took place on the licence before a decision was made to surrender tenure.
