An investigation of seven interesting IP anomalies on the Oraparinna Dome, which had been delineated in 1966 by Metals Exploration but not then tested by that company, has lately comprised anomaly gridding, 1:1200 scale geological mapping, and exploratory inclined percussion drilling in two areas (6 holes for 990 feet total penetration near the abandoned Loves mine, and 13 holes for 1549 feet in the Balfour Hills). This work has revealed that a strongly faulted diapiric mass, which lies partly in unconformable contact with undeformed Lower Adelaidean country rocks, is mineralised by copper carbonates along its eastern margin for a strike length of 1 mile, in four zones forming an orebody with estimated total reserves of the order of 40,000 tons averaging 1.7% Cu. The mineralised quartz sandstone bed is 10-15 feet wide and occupies an inferred north-south trending anticlinal structure within the diapir. Primary chalcopyrite also occurs within an overlying bedded dolomite, where random grab sampling gave 0.5% Cu. Indications are that a large, low grade copper deposit may be present in this locality. Continued drilling and mapping is advised, to try to increase the proved and indicated ore reserves. Preliminary beneficiation tests carried out on ore samples taken from the drillholes have been encouraging: mineral separation by flotation works well, and the copper metal recovery rates from acid leaching with sulphuric acid, via agitation and percolation leach stages, are generally good, although possibly subject to high acid consumption by fine-grained gangue minerals.
