Two separate licence portions together totalling 270 square km or ~33.5% of the former area of EL 4052 have been partially relinquished due to their perceived diminished potential to contain shallow Tertiary heavy mineral sands occurrences. Licensee Marathon Resources had taken up the ground to use information obtainable from it to confirm structural and evolutionary features within the western Murray Basin of possible importance to defining the distribution of heavy mineral sands. Regionally, nine basin sequence stratigraphic logs were compiled from inspection of sediment exposures in quarries and on riverside cliffs located along the Murray River in SA. The vertical aspects of the exposures were measured and logged. Sediment sampling done within EL 4052 involved collecting a set of soil calcrete geochemical samples from roadsides that cover a representative proportion of the tenement. It was part of an experimental programme run by the company to evaluate the possible use of geochemistry to target areas of potential buried palaeo beach strandlines because, based on the chemical formulae of selected heavy minerals, it was thought to be possible by this means to confirm the existence of monazite, ilmenite, zircon and rutile within possible strandlines. 78 such trial samples were taken from within the northern block of the now relinquished area, and the acid digest 52 element suite assay data for these are herewith released to open file. Non-specific observations concerning the implications of the wider-sourced assay results are also presented, with particular reference to particular elements' apparent geochemical dispersive behaviour.
