A large area centred ~100 km south-east of Streaky Bay was taken up to explore for possible buried Tertiary, palaeodrainage sediment-sourced, palaeomarine shoreface placer deposits of heavy mineral sands (HM). Diatreme believed that the coastline of the proto Eucla Basin had formerly stretched eastwards as far as the location of this tenement area, and it was hoped that any preserved strata of this coastline, if present, might be rich in HM occurrences. During the sole year of tenure of the subject tenement, no field work was done. An office-based review made of the area's HM prospectivity concluded that potential exists for the presence of mineralised marine sands within Tertiary Pidinga Formation sediments on the northern margin of the EL, and along an elongate DEM feature, interpreted as a coastal dune complex, that runs down the core of the tenement area. However, a combination of unforeseen adverse factors which would affect planned exploration, including environmental constraints imposed by the Musgrave Prescribed Wells Area and the adjacent Lake Newland and Kulliparu Conservation Parks, the low tenor of HM mineralisation reported by BHP Minerals from drill intercepts that it had made in previous exploration, the presence of an extensive barren overburden sequence, and the evolving revised exploration strategy of the company, led to a decision to fully surrender EL 5429.
