An area centred ~10 km north of Bordertown, abutting the SA/Vic. state border, has been explored for possible economic heavy mineral (HM) deposits that may have formed in the southern Murray Basin as beach strandings within Loxton-Parilla Sand formation sediments deposited during the Pliocene marine regression. The principal targets were possible concentrations of zircon and titanium minerals, as shown to exist in the area by previous explorers Basin Minerals and Iluka Resources. The results of drilling reported by Basin and Iluka were integrated by the current licensee, Australian Desalinated Water (ADW), with available airborne magnetic survey and digital terrain model data to derive a geological model for deposition and palaeogeography which then formed the basis for selection of exploration drill targets. These were chosen from positions indicated by previous explorers' earlier drilling as most likely to contain beach deposits where the sediment packages have been winnowed in a high energy marine 'surf zone' environment. Some weakly developed north-east trending aeromagnetic anomalies were able to be discerned by ADW that seemed to be aligned with the probable strike direction of the Loxton-Parilla sequence. Seven of these anomalies were initially selected for drill testing by shallow aircore drilling along single traverses run across each one. During May 2013, 23 vertical aircore holes for a total penetration of 556 m were completed along road verges and within farm paddocks, along a total drill traverse distance of about 10 km. The holes were carried as far as blade refusal, the deepest hole reaching 42 m depth. All holes were sampled at 1 metre intervals for stratigraphic logging and visual inspection for HM content after panning of the sediment sample. Although trace HM mineralisation was seen several locations, the tenor of mineralisation was assessed to be uneconomic, and consequently no samples were submitted for heavy mineral determination. It was concluded that the weak magnetic anomalies targeted by the 2013 drill programme reflect basement rock characteristics rather than mineralisation contained in the Loxton-Parilla Sand. The EL 5203 exploration concept was considered to have been sufficiently tested, and no further work was considered warranted. Accordingly, the licence was surrendered.
