An area located on the north-eastern side of Lake Alexandrina adjacent to Cooke Plains has been explored for possible saline groundwater resources that may be amenable to extraction for the purpose of solar salt (halite, NaCl) production in above-ground drying pans. During the entire four-year period of tenure of EL 4633, no field work was done. Technical aspects of the local hydrogeology were said to have been investigated for the licensee by consultancy Australian Groundwater Technologies, seeking to identify the renewable quantity of brine which may be available to use. Eventually it was decided to fully surrender the ground because it appeared that the economics of further development of the project were currently unviable.
