As part of a regional geochemical survey for signatures of stratiform base metal deposits, 184 stream sediment samples and 173 soil samples were collected in several areas surrounding Beltana to the north and east. Lead and zinc anomalies were detected over a strike length of six miles in eight creeks which drain mainly off the Bunyeroo Formation on the western side of the Mount Bayley Range, the highest sample return being 800 ppm Pb and 410 ppm Zn. No other significant trace metal anomalies were noted.
