EL 4871, EL 4872, EL 5067, EL 5068 and EL 5182 (the Delamerian Group) were originally granted to Gold Fields Australasia Pty Ltd (Gold Fields) for sediment-hosted orogenic gold exploration. All of these tenements were preceded by an earlier tenement, also previously jointly reported and made into a SA Mining Act Sunset Clause data release in May 2016 [see Env 11448]. The Gold Fields exploration program is described fully in that dataset, and is summarised in table form in the present report. After the above subject tenements were bought by Iluka Resources Limited (Iluka), the new licensee began exploring the Tertiary Murray Basin cover sediments for possible economic buried marine placer heavy mineral (HM) sand deposits. The target strata comprised littoral marine sediments of the Pliocene aged Loxton - Parilla Sand (LPS), in particular, relict strandline horizons that elsewhere in the basin commonly host placer deposits of HM sand. This beach facies unit is often very well developed, with a well defined foreshore - surf zone - lowershore regressive sequence. The best HM accumulations manifest themselves within the foreshore beds within this unit. Unlike in the majority of the rest of the Murray Basin, on the northern margin of the SA Murray Basin sector the LPS may be separated into its separate components based on their mode of deposition. The Parilla Sand (PS) is the fluvial to fluvio-lacustrine portion of the LPS, and the Loxton Sand (LS) is the shallow marine to littoral portion of the LPS. In the subject tenement areas the LS (as distinct from the LPS) was the target horizon for any heavy mineral accumulations. During the second half of 2013 and the first half of 2014, Iluka undertook an exploratory RC aircore traverse drilling program spread across the first five of now surrendered tenements. A total of 183 vertical open holes were drilled along fifteen traverses for a total penetration of 8740 m, aiming to test for the presence of coarse-grained LPS strandlines near an interpreted headland palaeogeomorphic feature. Although isolated occurrences of marginal marine sand were encountered, no significant high grade mineralisation containing a favourable HM assemblage was intersected within the foreshore facies sands. Because of the newly perceived downgraded HM potential of all of the licence areas, Iluka decided midway through 2015 to fully surrender them.
