In a search for possible economic stratiform copper occurrences in Upper Proterozoic sediments of the Willouran Ranges, the licensee undertook photogeological and field mapping studies plus a regional geochemical survey of outcropping rocks and regolith (3400 stream sediment, colluvial soil and rock chip samples were taken at a density of 2-5 per square mile). The post-glacial stratigraphic succession laid down above an erosional unconformity at the top of the Sturtian sequence, within which conglomeratic dolomite and laminated dark shale are the most significant rock types, was the focus of attention, since old copper workings occur at this position in two separate areas of the ranges. The older portion of the sequence is believed to show broad sedimentary and structural affinities with the famed, well-mineralised Katanga Group of the Belgian Congo. Although base metal values were evident in almost all samples tested, they seldom exceeded background levels, and appeared to be related to source rock horizons of limited extent. The field work did not result in the identification of any new prospective features warranting further investigation, and it was decided to allow tenure of the exploration licences to lapse.
