As part of a regional search for possible economic stratabound Early Palaeozoic base metal deposits, Kennecott Explorations carried out stream sediment sampling and geological mapping of the Kanyaka Syncline, plus more intensive near-mine exploration of old, abandoned copper prospects at Kanyaka by mine dump sampling, detailed mine surface mapping, and the acquisition of 2.3 line miles of self potential and induced polarization profiles, leading to rotary non-core drilling of geophysical and geochemical targets (11 vertical holes for a total of 3112 feet). A small area of low grade zinc-copper mineralisation was outlined at the Kanyaka mine. The best copper assay value obtained was 0.5% Cu and the best zinc assay value was 2.75% Zn, each over separate stratigraphic intervals of 11 feet. Primary chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena occur below the base of oxidation, and the mineralisation is stratigraphically controlled within the Parachilna Formation. The indicated strike length of significant copper mineralisation is less than 2000 feet. Substantial leaching of zinc, and to a lesser extent copper, has occurred from parts of the oxidised zone. Subsurface sample zinc grades are of the order of ten times those of surface samples. Seven 1 foot to 10 feet deep trenches, cut across the Parachilna Formation at approximately 1 mile intervals north of the Kanyaka mine, revealed fairly constant minor lead and zinc content within their total 2880 feet of bedrock section. Copper values, however, were extremely low (usually less than 100 ppm), so it appears that the copper mineralisation at Kanyaka represents a small, localised deposit. Accordingly, it was decided to let tenure of the licence lapse at its expiry.
