To implement its plan to deepen Paratoo DD1 to a total depth of approximately 2000 feet, in order to try to intersect economic copper mineralisation in unweathered rocks below the water table at 500 feet vertical depth, Kennecott recommenced inclined diamond drilling of that hole on 3/10/1966, but found progress to be slow owing to difficult drilling conditions within broken ground. Pervasive minor to trace copper sulphides and native copper were logged in the drill core below the hole re-entry depth of 722 feet 3 inches, occurring both parallel to bedding in siltstones and also in joint planes. A best drill core sample assay result of 0.21% Cu was returned from the depth interval 880-890 feet. It was decided to abandon drilling DD1 when it had reached a depth of 1214 feet, owing to continual caving of the hole after it had passed through a fault zone at 1104-1126 feet depth. The bottomhole lithology is a dark grey to black, well-laminated graphitic siltstone that contains very finely disseminated sulphides and native copper. After the cessation of diamond drilling, the company decided to put down five inclined rotary percussion holes totalling 2500 feet to try to achieve stratigraphic penetration equivalent to that which hole DD1 should have made, and then at the same time be able to test the bedrock along strike below soil geochemical anomalies. However, these drillholes also failed to encounter significant copper mineralisation, with the best intercept (measured from cuttings) being 22 feet @ 0.32% Cu. In other work, Kennecott completed three more lines of shallow auger holes to extend its soil sampling programme onto the northern limb of the Paratoo fold structure, and the results showed that some indications of underlying copper mineralisation are also present there. In view of the largely disappointing drilling outcome, it was decided to surrender the licence.
