An area centred on the township of Wynarka in the Murray Mallee, and which extended NW-SE along the northern side of the Padthaway Ridge, has been explored for possible economic placer occurrences of heavy mineral (HM) sands that may have formed within the Late Tertiary Murray Basin shallow marine clastic sedimentary sequence (Loxton and Parilla sands). During the first stage of the exploration history reported on herein, licence operator/JV partner Australian Zircon NL drilled 21 exploratory aircore holes for a total penetration of 693.5 m early in 2009 [but the data is not included here - to obtain it, see Env 9514]. This work followed upon the conduct of initial desktop studies of HM prospectivity, and a review of previous explorers' drilling data. Drill targets were selected based on known earlier HM intercepts, and on structural/stratigraphic interpretations of aeromagnetic/radiometric data from a survey that had been flown in April 2001. After Murray Zircon began exploring the subject area in mid-2012, it drilled a total of 90 open vertical RC aircore holes for 3135 m along parts of seven north-south traverses. Holes were sampled at 1-metre depth intervals, and were logged with a gamma ray tool at the cessation of drilling. A total of 483 drill cuttings samples, estimated from hand panning to contain HM of interest, were submitted for laboratory heavy mineral analysis. The drilling done along the northern end of the Naturi - Murray Bridge Road traverse yielded the best results seen by Murray Zircon for this tenement, disclosing limited significant accumulations of HM within a palaeo-beach surf zone facies that was intersected by two holes spaced 40 m apart (i.e. 2 m @~3.0% HM below 22 m depth). However, the proportion of valuable HM species present in this intercept was low. Elsewhere in the district, fine to medium grained calcareous littoral sands, or else, very fine grained, micaceous offshore bar sands, were frequently encountered, generally carrying insignificant (<1% HM) mineralisation composed largely of trash HM species. A more widely developed (along strike) but much deeper lying surf zone was found in the Karoonda West area by six of fifteen holes put in along two traverses. Disappointingly, the grade of the HM mineralisation intersected was again low, although the proportion of contained zircon was greater, giving moderate radioactivity responses on downhole gamma ray logs. A best intercept of 7 m @ 1.13% HM from below 40 m depth was reported from hole MZX6223. Drilling to follow up Australian Zircon's previous HM intercepts made in 2009 near Kulde along the Marmon Jarbuk Range dune toe scarp only produced a best result of 2 m @ ~0.5% HM from below 8 m depth in hole MZX6283, thus downgrading the perceived HM potential of this palaeogeomorphic feature. Murray Zircon now considers that the results of the drilling which it has conducted on EL 5047, along with the results of drilling previously conducted on EL 3786, are sufficient to rule out the probable existence there of any significant accumulations of HM. Consequently, a decision was made to fully surrender tenure.
