Part of the north-western side of the Fleurieu Peninsula was taken up to explore for inferred buried IOCG-style copper-gold-uranium mineralisation which, by analogy with properties of the known eastern Gawler Craton occurrences, was postulated by Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) as likely to occur within the outcropping and shallowly buried Barossa Complex at the south-western end of the Myponga Inlier. Here these Palaeoproterozoic rocks are often covered by thin, unconsolidated Permian fluvioglacial sediments, whereas in the northern part of EL 5061, they are overlain by Adelaidean Neoproterozoic metasediments, the stratigraphic contact being controlled by an ENE-trending, southerly dipping fold-thrust zone. Exploration completed by FMG during the first licence year was mainly devoted to making logistical preparations for planned ground and airborne gravity surveys, and for a campaign of surface geochemical sampling covering the licence area to canvass the presence of the IOCG pathfinder suite of trace elements, as well as in conducting detailed desktop reviews of available geoscientific data. The initial assessment made of the publically available data did not yield any untested new geophysical anomalies.
