At the invitation of the South Australian Department of Mines, a mining company consortium has been formed to continue recent SA Government studies at Burra aimed at establishing the economic feasibility of re-opening the historic copper workings to access remnant oxidised ore and, as well, to actively explore for other orebodies, including sulphide lodes at depth (cf. SADM 1965-1966 Annual Report, p: 23). The corporate entity created to perform these investigations has been called Mines Exploration Pty Ltd (MEPL). The ensuing, brownfields-focussed 18-month long work programme undertaken at Burra by MEPL has included mine grid surveying, the conduct of surface - based induced polarisation geophysical surveys and bedrock geochemical sampling along short grid line traverses, and an intensive drilling campaign using 3 rigs to complete 59 holes for a total penetration of 19,042 feet, including 4040 feet of 45 degree inclined diamond coring performed in 6 holes. Over 11,000 feet of vertical rotary/percussion drilling in the vicinity of the old Burra mine workings has delineated a total of 3 million tons of oxidised copper ore at an indicated drilling grade of 1.71% Cu. Approximately one half of this total reserve had been indicated by earlier drilling activities of the South Australian Department of Mines. A most important and currently unresolved aspect of the work now being undertaken by MEPL at Burra is the possibility of finding economic copper sulphide mineralisation occurring at depth. The most significant lead in this matter so far seen is the definite lode channel intersected in DDH BS4, at a vertical depth of 400 feet immediately south of the old open cut. Two additional diamond drillholes are being put down on flanking traverses to the north and south of BS4, and it is recommended that another 3 holes be drilled from west to east, aimed at testing the target horizon below 700 feet depth. At the completion of such a drilling programme, an effective spread of east-to-west and west-to-east 45 degree inclined diamond holes will have been drilled from local grid section 12,300N to 16,000N. A second, strong recommendation is to test by rotary/percussion drilling the IP/surface geochemical Cu anomaly found on line 80N south of Burra.
