TARGET: Roll-front uranium deposits in buried Tertiary sediments. EXPLORATION: An airborne radiometric survey of 600 line miles, and reconnaissance groundwater sampling, followed by the drilling of 42 rotary holes (total 17,928 feet), 24 of which were geophysically logged. RESULTS: No significant radiometric anomalies were identified by the preliminary work. All drillholes ended in Cainozoic or Mesozoic sediments. Modest radioactivity was observed to be associated with two isolated, weakly developed geochemical redox cells. The relatively closely spaced drilling failed to significantly extend these anomalous areas. On the basis of this lithological and radiometric evidence, it was considered unlikely that economic uranium mineralisation would be discovered on SML 439, so the ground was dropped.
