GEL 177 was granted to Eden Energy Ltd initially for 5 years on 9th Jan 2005. The licence was located on the Birdsville Track some 200kms NE of Marree, over an area of a distinctive gravity low interpreted to be due to the presence of a granitic pluton which could act as a primary heat source if decaying radioactive minerals were present. It was also hoped that 2-3000m of insulating sediment would be present that is vital for the trapping of produced heat. Exploration activities for this licence were referred to as the Mungeranie Project. An orientation Magneto-Telluric Survey was recorded in 2007 in conjunction with MT surveys in GEL 169 and GEL 185 also held by Eden Energy. Results confirmed that crystalline basement is at relatively shallow depths across the tenement. Hot Dry Rocks Ltd (HDR) completed a review of GEL 177 using all available seismic data and provided a risk analysis for the reservoir and also the temperature aspect of the geothermal play. Although a high geothermal gradient has been measured in the Mulkarra West 1 drill hole (56 degrees/km) the lack of sedimentary cover(<2000m) is seen a deterrent to a possible Deep Buried Sedimentary Aquifer and points more to the possibility of an Engineered Geothermal System(EGS). A drill hole to 3500m was recommended but was never drilled before the licence was surrendered on 6th Feb 2009.
