2 contiguous GEL licences, 175 and 176 in the Renmark area were granted to Eden Energy on 23rd May 2005 for an initial period for 5 years. The joint project was known as the Renmark Geothermal Project. A combination of modelled geothermal gradients and the potential for a thick insulative cover sequence of sedimentary rocks makes this area of the Renmark Trough an attractive target for geothermal exploration. The Renmark Trough, an early Permian basin underlies the Tertiary Murray basin and is thought to contain from 2000-3000m of sediments on top of a pre-Devonian basement. PACE Funding was approved for the support of the drilling and logging of Chowilla 1 which was drilled as a salt injection bore for DWLBC. This bore was only drilled to a maximum depth of 515m. Measured conductivities of 10 sedimentary samples were indicative of very good heat insulating properties of the sedimentary sequence. However heat flows calculated for Chowilla 1 suggested little prospectivity of there being appropriate temperatures at an economic depth for there to be considered a geothermal play. Both licences were surrendered on 7th April 2009 before entering the 5th licence year.
