Two parts comprising 50% of a licence located 130 km north of Fowlers Bay and immediately south of the Trans Australia Railway, in the vicinity of Barton Siding, have been relinquished due to their perceived diminished potential for finding economic deposits of Tertiary mineral sands. No work took place recently on the now relinquished licence portions, but under tenure of previous EL 3495, Red Metal and Cristal Mining acquired an airborne EM survey and then performed scout traverse drilling to follow up EM targets, as well as later undertaking an airborne magnetic/radiometric survey. The AEM was flown by helicopter during October 2008 to try to map the stratigraphy of the Tertiary sediments and to define the underlying basement topography. Geosolutions acquired 593.3 line km of AEM data along ENE-WSW orientated flight lines that mainly crossed the eastern part of EL 3495, and also extended somewhat onto two adjoining licences. The exploratory drilling took place during May 2010 along three traverses located in the eastern relinquished portion, where 25 vertical aircore open holes were completed for a total penetration of 950 m. The holes revealed a broad but thin and poorly mineralised strandline within the Barton Sand, the strike extent of which remained open beyond the tested ~15 km length. Because no high concentrations of detrital heavy minerals (HM) were found, this was thought to indicate that the drilled area lacked the Tertiary depositional environment controls which elsewhere in the basin created and preserved high grade mineral sand deposits (e.g. an open-to the-ocean setting where storm wave and wind action could preferentially move HMs into regional embayment trapsites, coupled with sediment winnowing effects enhanced by both an entrenched marine still-stand and seasonal fluvial inundation). During July 2013, licensee Red Metal flew an airborne aeromagnetic and radiometric survey over EL 3495. A subsequent review of this survey data and the historical drill data led to the JV partners deciding to relinquish ground surrounding the core of the tenement, which was seen to contain the least promising HM intercepts and geophysical responses.
