GEL 279 was granted to Geothermal Resources Ltd on 29th June 2007 (Geothermal Resources Pty Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Havilah Resources NL). This licence was located some 85kms NW of Broken Hill adjacent to the NSW/SA border in the Curnamona Province. The main focus of the licence area was to assess the licence area for the presence of granitic bodies at depth, determine the sedimentary thickness/depth to basement in the area and finally to measure the geothermal gradient for the area in any available drill holes. GEL 279 had a contiguous boundary with GEL 280 (also held by Geothermal Resources Ltd) to the west and the area was also held under multiple mineral tenements by Havilah Resources (in particular EL 3482). Temperature logging of drill hole CartSpring DDH1on the western boundary of the licence area returned a modest geothermal gradient of 26degrees per 1000 metres which is indicative of an average crustal geothermal gradient and downgraded the area in regards to the location of heat producing granites. The licence was surrendered on 16th May 2008 before entering the 2nd year.
