3 contiguous geothermal licences were granted to AAA Energy Pty Ltd on 20th Feb 2008 for an initial period of 5 years. These licences were all located over the southern margin of the Cooper-Eromanga Basin where a pronounced gravity low parallels the trend of the Tenappera Trough. These licences were taken out to in order to investigate the potential for production of geothermal energy sourced from hot basement rocks and also the more conventional source of aquifers from within the sedimentary section of the Great Artesian Basin. Based on existing petroleum well data it is known that Granitic rocks occur at depth and temperature gradients in 21 of the wells located within the region had an average temperature gradient of 48 degrees /km of depth. Sedimentary thickness in the area is interpreted to be in the range 1400-2200m and while offering an effective insulating blanket the thicknesses may be less than desirable. The licence holders commissioned an independent geologists report on the areas prospectivity for geothermal energy and sought to raise capital to further exploration. No further work was completed and all three licences surrendered at the end of the first year on 19th Feb 2009.
