GEL’s 188-205 were a set of contiguous licences forming a block of some 9000km2 and were granted to Pacific Hydro on 1st May 2005 for an initial term of 5 years. Initial target was for hot sedimentary aquifers at approximately 2000m depth with areas of high porosity and permeability. The project area was centred over the Birdsville Track Ridge, an anticlinal structure where sedimentary thickness is thought to be sufficient to support geothermal fluid production. Studies of Thermal Gradient identified an anomalous high gradients and it was anticipated that these maybe related to thermally anomalous granitic bodies at depth. Licences GEL 188,189 and 190 in the west of the project area were surrendered early during tenure and GEL 236,237 and 238 were granted on the eastern end of the project area. Temperature logging of 3 bore holes, Pandieburra 1, Georges Bore and Goyder Lagoon Bore produced temperature gradients of between 52.8-56.1 degrees per km suggesting a possible temperature of 140degrees at the target Hutton/Poolowanna Formation zone. Seismic studies on available seismic lines, porosity and permeability studies on 11 core samples from Pandieburra 1 plus petrographic studies were completed. 2 well sites were selected for drillholes to 400m and cleared by the Dieri claimant Group. In 2011 all 18 licences were consolidated into 3 larger licences with essentially the same work program and total surface area. These new consolidated licences were GEL 191, 192 and 193. Drill holes were proposed, infill gravity surveys planned and a 3D Seismic Survey suggested over the core of the gravity low but no field work was ever completed. While there were applications for extension and offers for a second term all licences expired on 28th Feb 2015 at the end of the first licence term.
