GEL’s 249 and 250 were granted to Geothermal Resources Ltd on 1st November 2006 over an area covering a portion of the Robe Trough near the northern margin of the Otway Basin. These 2 licences were held in conjunction with GEL 214, 215, 216, 217 (previously granted on 12th July 2006) and GEL498 previously granted on 27th May 2009 forming an extensive project area over the northern precincts of the Otway Basin. There were 2 basic geothermal models targeted by these licences, namely: 1. hot dry rock model requiring granites at depth covered by thermal insulating sediments up to 3000m thick OR 2. Hot aquifer model requiring porous wet sandstones at depths of 3-4 kms heated by deeply buried granites. During 2008/2009 bottom hole temperatures were measured in approximately 30 water wells with the greatest depth measured of 279m. On 20th November 2009 all licences (GEL 214, 215, 216, 217 and GEL 250) were consolidated into a new licence, GEL 214 covering an area of 2936km2 from Robe in the west to Penola in the east and south to Beachport and north to Lucindale.
