Iluka Resources has been exploring the subject area, located east of the townships of Streaky Bay and Ceduna, since October 2003, as part of a continuing regional search for possible economic, zircon-rich Tertiary marine placer mineral sands deposits that may have formed in the eastern Eucla Basin. The target littoral sediments are those which were deposited during multiple Tertiary marine transgressions, and comprise the Pidinga Formation, Garford Formation and Narlaby Palaeochannel system sands. Concentrated strandline occurrences of heavy mineral (HM) sand assemblages containing high relative proportions of zircon and rutile were the favoured deposits to find via exploratory RC aircore drilling. Iluka also targeted Neogene fluvial palaeochannels with the aim of intersecting favourable sedimentary uranium depositional environments. No work was completed on EL 5380 during the period 03/5/2012 to 04/5/2016 by Iluka Resources or its new farm-in partner Doray Minerals. All of the actual past work completed on this licence area is described in prevously submitted Group 3 tenement joint annual reports. During this earlier period, a significant amount of drilling was undertaken on Petina, the results of which indicated only sparsely preserved marine sands, a shallow depth to basement, and revealed only minor HM accumulations. Consequently, Iluka has now decided that EL 5380 is no longer prospective to it for HM because there appears to be little remaining scope geologically for the accommodation or preservation of marine sands, and this means there is no chance of finding a viable Tier 1 deposit.
