No field work was done during the first year of tenure. A review of previous drillhole data for the subject area has indicated that crystalline basement occurs at an average depth of 10 m. The entire area is dominated by a 40 km former promontory, which would have formed a vast heavy mineral sands (HM) trap during deposition of Pliocene/Early Quaternary marine sediments (depending on detrital HM influx during that time). However, records show that the cover terrain around and across this feature has been extensively explored in the past, and no anomalous HM accumulations were found. The former marine marginal sequence has lately been subjected to severe erosion, such that fluvio-aeolian cover now largely overlies the basement rock. The western half of the licence area is considered by Iluka to have very low HM prospectivity, and thus it has been surrendered.
