A small area centred ~10 km north-west of Whyalla, straddling the Iron Knob Road and extending northwards from there, has been explored for possible buried economic IOCG mineralisation that may have formed in Proterozoic basement rocks. During the first licence year, the licensee performed a desktop review of IOCG prospectivity using open file geological and geophysical data. Several fault structures were interpreted to cross the licence area. Past exploratory drilling was only shallow and was believed to not have adequately tested the area's potential. During licence Year 2, St Barbara personnel made a reconnaissance field trip during September 2013 and undertook preliminary geological mapping. Following this, a flora and fauna ecology survey and an aboriginal heritage protection clearance survey were conducted over sites proposed for RC drilling. After an Exploration Work Application had been submitted to DMITRE in November 2013, approval was received on 13/1/2014 to drill four reverse circulation holes totalling 1000 m. The objective of the initial drilling programme was to assess the shallow covered (<20 m) Brambles basement IOCG target, where historical shallow drilling had encountered evidence of typical IOCG alteration assemblages (haematite-sericite) and had penetrated Hiltaba Suite granite. Brambles was interpreted to lie at the junction of a regional E-W orientated dextral normal fault and a regional NE-SW orientated transfer structure. In March 2014, St Barbara suddenly announced that that it would be suspending active sole-risk mineral exploration in Australia, and began to seek joint venture partners to continue exploration on its licence holdings. During licence Year 3, no work was done. St Barbara continue to seek partners to fund future work. During Licence Year 4, the decision was made to surrender the subject licence and focus the company's attention on its exploration holdings elsewhere.
