In late 2011, regional scale satellite recorded Aster multispectral data was purchased to cover the entirety of Perilya’s northern Flinders Ranges Project acreage. The data acquired was intended to be used to locate areas of potentially unmapped carbonate stratigraphic outcrops, as well as to identify areas potentially having alteration mineralogy, particularly any iron enrichment due to haematite alteration, that is a trait usually associated with zinc silicate deposits in the region. Quartz ratios were found to accurately outline areas of outcropping carbonate strata, while ferric-ferrous iron ratios were used to characterize iron enrichment due to haematite alteration. Unfortunately, the satellite multispectral data that had been recorded over most of the area covered by then subject EL 3347 was significantly obscured by cloud cover at the overflight time, and therefore was of little help in generating targets within that tenement. The only new on-ground field work that was done on the subject licence was conducted during 2014, when a reconnaissance geochemical program of XRF soil sampling and rock chip sampling was completed over a belt of Cambrian strata running east-west across EL 4603 in the area of the Mount Serle prospect. This area contains several historic barite, lead-silver and copper mine workings, while the western portion of the survey area, extending onto then adjoining EL 4622, was primarily a stratigraphic target. A total of 431 XRF soil readings were collected on a 500 m line spacing. A total of 11 rock chip samples were also collected within the tenement and submitted for major and trace element analyses. Results of the XRF surveying were in general disappointing, with no appreciable base metal anomalism identified across the entire area surveyed. The maximum lead and zinc values returned were 128 ppm Zn and 132 ppm Pb, which are considerably lower than what would indicate proximity to a significant zinc silicate deposit. Weakly anomalous copper (> 200 ppm, up to 608 ppm Cu) was however defined in a restricted area around the historic mine workings. Interestingly, rock chip sample analyses identified moderately to strongly anomalous levels of pathfinder elements including arsenic, antimony and vanadium in the immediate Mount Serle area. No anomalous base-metals were returned from any of the samples, however. It was concluded that at the Mount Serle prospect, the lack of any appreciable zinc or lead mineralisation had greatly downgraded its prospectivity. Moderately elevated copper values appeared to be related to vein-hosted copper (+/-barite) occurrences, and were not considered to have potential for a large tonnage copper deposit. It was therefore recommended that the remaining portions of EL4603 be allowed to expire without renewal.
