Reconnaissance geochemical exploration for possible economic stratiform copper deposits hosted by Adelaidean and Lower Cambrian sediments in an area of the northern Flinders Ranges located east of Blinman has consisted of aerial surveys, helicopter-assisted stream sediment sampling (~3000 samples), and follow-up ground-based geological mapping and traverse rock chip sampling in the vicinity of geochemical anomalies. The highest anomalies found were 1000 ppm Zn on two 100 foot long chip traverses sampled near Mount Chambers, and up to 2500 ppm Zn and 200 ppm Pb in iron-manganese oxide cappings to the Wilkawillina and Parara limestones in the Mount Lyall area. The Wilkawillina Limestone close to the old Wirrealpa lead mine and for a distance further east, adjacent to a fault, contains visible galena and barite. Because the rock chip base metal assay values that were obtained in general are no better than the most anomalous stream sediment values, the implication is that an unexpected high degree of dispersion into stream sediments has occurred from relatively small and isolated high grade mineralised pockets concealed within particular horizons in the limestones. Kennecott considered it to be very doubtful that any large stratiform type orebody could be present and yet remain undetected by the sampling coverage that was made across some 3000 feet of stratigraphic thickness.
