A number of semi-contiguous licence areas located immediately south and south-east of Lake Frome have been explored for possible economic buried Tertiary sedimentary uranium mineralisation. No field work was done during the two years of project licence tenure. To guide selection of an appropriate exploration strategy, consultant David Tonkin was engaged to review previous mineral exploration outcomes and to perform a gap analysis of existing data. It was found that the entire project ground had been well investigated in the past by a moderately dense coverage of reconnaissance drillholes, but this had been achieved without having the benefit of modern targeting methods such as airborne EM surveying. Therefore it was suggested that reasonable potential could remain for finding overlooked new or small greenfields uranium deposits. Modern Exploration decided to review and evaluate AREVA’s comprehensive technical dataset that had been acquired between 2004 and 2014, to help it prioritise where to conduct further drilling. However, the prevailing depressed uranium price made it extremely difficult for the licensee to attract suitable joint venture partners to help reduce the risk of its planned greenfields uranium exploration, and eventually the Frome Uranium Project had to be abandoned.
