An area extending for ~10 to ~60 km westwards from Kingoonya, comprising three separate sub-blocks, is being explored for buried Archaean greenstone belt - hosted primary metallic mineralisation. Work undertaken during the first year of tenure comprised the establishment of a reference library for potential host rock lithotypes, through petrological descriptions commissioned on eleven rock chip samples, and the conduct of trial surface geochemical sampling of soils and calcrete plus various plant media, the latter aspect being addressed by an as yet incomplete PhD research project being run jointly with the University of Adelaide. From laboratory assaying of 4 MMI samples and 226 calcrete samples, almost one quarter of the calcrete samples returned gold values of more than 5 ppb Au, i.e. clearly above background. 4 calcrete samples collected from alongside the Transcontinental Railway line returned >10 ppb Au. For the 293 plant biogeochemical samples collected, only preliminary assay results are to hand: in them gold is far more muted (average concentration 0.17 ppb Au), while some of the values for the major base metals appear to be weakly elevated. Follow-up biogeochemical sampling is planned.
