A study has been made on the feasibility of using magnesite ore mined from BHP leases in the Port Germein Gorge to produce up to 50 tons per day of high grade magnesia (MgO) using the Bicarbonate Process (ref. US Bureau of Mines, 1946) at the presently mothballed Port Pirie Uranium Plant owned by the South Australian Government. The proposed operation was deemed technically feasible and could utilise a large part of the equipment still existing at the plant, after certain modifications. However, the present state of the Australian domestic market for high purity magnesia does not warrant retaining the plant for any near-future use in its production.
