An area covering most of Island Lagoon, a large playa lake which is centred ~30 km south-west of Pimba township and the Stuart Highway, has been explored for possible economic deposits of potash in the form of potassium sulphate, that it was thought could exist in commercially viable amounts within the lake sediments and entrained brine. It was envisaged that any local supplier of relatively chlorine-free potash salt would find a ready market in the agricultural sector, which presently imports the bulk of its potash needs in the form of muriate of potash (KCl). The only work conducted on the licence was a field reconnaissance visit and the collection of 8 ?near-surface water samples from sites at various positions around the margin of the lake, to send for laboratory water quality analysis of their contents of evaporate mineral - related dissolved cations and anions. No encouraging assay values were returned, so it was quickly decided to surrender tenure.
