70% of the original area of the subject licence, which is located north of the Trans Australian Railway and approximately 200 km north-west of the town of Ceduna and 75 km east of the Maralinga Village, has been relinquished due to it being regarded by the joint venturers as no longer having prospectivity either for economic heavy mineral (HM) sands or gold mineralisation. During its tenure, the now relinquished licence portion was extensively explored for HM by Iluka via traverse drilling (111 vertical aircore holes for a total of 6141 m) carried out in 2010-2011, which was designed to test the present day Barton Range and the interpreted position of the buried palaeogeomorphic Barton scarp. The ground surface elevation across the majority of the tenement is at >200 m RL, requiring relatively deep drilling to reach the prospective Eocene shoreface strata. The drilling intersected localised HM accumulations at depth along the Barton scarp, which occur within poorly sorted sands. The majority of sands drilled were either barren of HM or had low (<1% visually estimated) HM contents. From laboratory heavy mineral analysis of 886 selected 1.5 metre depth interval drill cuttings samples, the best mineralised intercepts were made in hole MAR0071 with 1 m @ 7.1% HM from 45 m depth, and in hole MAR0127 with 1.5 m @ 6.4% HM from 69 m depth. Two phases of traverse infill aircore drilling were completed to follow up some higher grade intercepts encountered near the middle of the licence, but the results did not indicate any volumetrically significant HM occurrences. With relevance to the same ground, farminee Doray Minerals has performed an overview reconnaissance field visit, and has sampled and assayed stored drill chip samples from previously drilled holes, to inform a desktop geological interpretation of the cover and bedrock geology. From their analysis and modelling, Doray regard the southern 30% portion of the tenement as still possessing gold potential, which is the reason for the JV retaining it.
