An historically intensively prospected area of the Adelaide Hills containing numerous alluvial gold workings and shallow shafts sunk on quartz reefs has been explored for possible buried economic primary bedrock gold occurrences that may have formed in fault and shear zone stratabound epithermal/hydrothermal and unconformity-related settings. Initially, doing work on the tenement was restricted during late 2014-early 2015 as a result of a major bushfire (the Sampson Flat Fire) that burnt through the licence area and rendered it unsafe to carry out field activities for a period of approximately 4 months. It was realised that in general getting on-ground access to the tenement would be less than optimal because it contains actively managed government-owned forestry areas and also is mainly covered by freehold land containing private dwellings. This latter class of properties has required the conduct of negotiations with many landowners in order to gain access. Access was denied for a number of land parcels. Similarly, one of the most prospective areas of the tenement is covered by a section 419 notice, and is thus currently excluded from mineral exploration operations performed under the Mining Act, for reasons of “preserving mining heritage”. Rock chip sampling (44 samples) which was carried out on outcrops and at historic workings was moderately encouraging, with assay values of up to 3.5 g/t Au being returned. Blanket soil sampling (344 samples assayed) of surrounding ground in the northern Para Wirra Conservation Park returned a maximum assay value of 5 ppb Au. Retrograde metamorphism of the bedrock there has led to a distinctive magnetic signature for the reef structures that run through the Para Wirra and Stockyard Gully gold mine workings. The retrograde metamorphism, associated with intense shearing, has destroyed the magnetite within the shear zone, leaving a distinct magnetic low between other, generally magnetite-rich zones. This observation suggested that acquiring ground magnetic or aeromagnetic data could provide a useful tool for future gold reef targeting. The licence area lacks high quality magnetic data, but map records from an old airborne survey were found and roughly geo-referenced, and thereby showed several significant trends along strike from Para Wirra and Stockyard Gully that it was believed warranted follow-up. During the second licence year, further field mapping was undertaken of an area to the west of the previous year's coverage, with another 7 rock chip samples collected. These all returned gold assay values below detection. While altered rocks were encountered, there was little evidence of potential mineralisation showing in the outcrops. In this area, a detailed examination was made of the Neoproterozoic rock features along the Skillogalee Dolomite formation's unconformable stratigraphic contact with Barossa Complex crystalline basement gneisses, looking for evidence of Bird in Hand style gold mineralisation. Nothing of interest was disclosed. No work took place on EL 5402 during its third year, before the decision was made to allow its tenure to lapse.
