The remnant portion of EL 4962, which is centred ~30 km north-east of Ceduna, has now been fully surrendered owing to a perceived lack of prospectivity for economic detrital zircon entrapped there within Tertiary Eucla Basin sediments. During the first term of tenure by Iluka Resources as EL 3746, the licensee undertook first pass regional exploration drilling on interpreted heavy mineral (HM) trapsites, with follow-up close-spaced drilling done where necessary to evaluate HM occurrences. The aim was to test for the presence of marine Ooldea Sands in the area between the Barton and Ooldea Ranges, and also to investigate palaeocoastal sand deposits around buried headland positions which had been inferred from [Space] Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) data. Between 2007 and 2009, Iluka drilled a total of 177 vertical exploratory aircore holes on EL 3746 for a total penetration of 4614.25 m, at sites distributed along regional roadside traverses. The pre-Tertiary basement was found to lie at shallow depth, and no significant HM accumulations were revealed. Because little or no HM could be estimated visually in the field from drill cuttings samples collected at 1.5 metre intervals, 173 selected samples were submitted for laboratory heavy mineral analysis. From these, only 6 contained HM >1%. Around the depths of these samples, there was no clear logged indication of sediment re-working that might result in a nearby concentration of HM. Furthermore, the target marine sand units appeared to be poorly preserved on EL 3746. Farminee Doray Minerals had lately concluded that the licence area does not hold good potential for placer gold, and thus was happy for Iluka to proceed with the surrender of tenure at the end of Year 15.
