Continuing exploration of the area near Olary, primarily for undiscovered near-surface lodes of economic copper and silver minerals, has involved mainly a close inspection of several old abandoned mines and limited surface geochemical sampling of mineralised zones found in Adelaidean and Willyama Complex weathered basement rocks. Along with 1:2400 scale geological mapping and grid surveying, ground magnetic and induced polarisation surveys were undertaken at the Olary silver mine, where up to 14 oz/ton Ag was returned from sampling of a sheared graphite schist. An IP anomaly detected here was tested by one inclined diamond drillhole put down to TD 325 feet, but only weak sulphide mineralisation was encountered in granite gneiss at around 258 feet depth. Following the recognition of similar ironstone-related rich silver mineralisation and an associated IP anomaly nearby at Mount Perseverance, a second inclined diamond hole was drilled there to TD 626 feet 6 inches to intersect a prospective quartz vein at depth. However, the corehole trajectory appeared to veer way off course, and therefore the intended target was missed. Here the IP anomaly was again thought to arise from cored graphitic gneiss and barren sulphide mineralisation. Despite the disappointment of the drilling results gained at the above two prospects, it was decided in mid-1971 to further test some geochemical and IP anomalies seen both there and at three other prospects, this time with shallow percussion drilling (5 holes totalling 634 feet, plus 3 later diamond-cored twins for 238 feet). No significant intersections of mineralisation were made.
