IRON BARON is located at the northern end of the North Middleback Range, and is the southern extension of the Iron Prince deposit from which it is separated by a large mass of intrusive dolerite. The orebody has an overall complex form resulting from the disruption of ore having the structure of a series of minor syncline and anticline flexures, plunge gently north, dip gentle to steep east, being disrupted by large volumes of dolerite dykes and sills. This package in turn is fault bound to the east and west. To the west the ore is faulted against a quartz-sericite schist, possibly mylonitised Cooyerdoo Granite, and on the east by dolerite dyke intruded into the fault, which separates ore from mylonitised Cooyerdoo Granite to the east. The ore is dominantly a goethitic hematite, with generally well preserved laminations of the protore BIF. The ore has a strike length >1,500m, highly variable width to maximum 350m, and a depth extent in the order of 150-200m below original hill top. Base to the ore is host BIF, some of which shows a transition to ore having elevated iron values but accompanied by high SiO2 values. The stratigraphic level is assumed to be Lower Middleback Iron Formation. Iron Baron Mine includes 2 main historical pits, the northern Little Baron Pit, and the southern Big Baron Pit. Also a proposed new pit the Iron Wizard. Iron Baron was in continuous operation for 57 years from 1933 to ~1990. No overall production figure is published, though estimates would suggest from 50-60Mt for the Iron Baron Mining area which combines production from the Iron Baron with that from the Iron Prince, Iron Queen, Iron Baron South, and Iron Cavalier. Campaign mining of old ore stockpiles has recovered an estimated 710,000 tonne of ore to 2009. There has been recent near mine resource drilling to confirm additional resources including scree resources west (Iron Baroness), and NW (Iron Empress) of the main range. Resource figures to June 2016 reported at 6.6Mtonne at 56.7%Fe for the main mine area, and >30Mtonne at >40%Fe for the scree resources. Current owners are Simec Mining, part of the GFC Alliance group of companies
