A small licence area centred ~ 28 km south-southeast of Yunta, which consists of two separate sub-blocks, has been explored for possible economic stratabound iron ore mineralisation that could occur within buried glacial tillitic/siltstone strata of the Neoproterozoic Braemar Ironstone, beneath sparse but persistent poor outcrops of this bedrock unit. The only reported work performed by the licence operator Wentworth Metals Group (WMG), which took place during licence Year 2, entailed stream sediment sampling of creek bed detrital ironstone-rich sediments, for laboratory analysis to determine their magnetite content. The surface sediment geochemistry was analysed in the first instance with a portable XRF spectrometer and, later on, 350 selected 20 kg samples were crushed and subjected to Davis Tube Recovery (DTR) yield tests of their magnetite, which gave an average iron content in the separated magnetic mineral concentrates which was less than the >62% Fe grade required for marketability. A method was devised for calibrating the XRF spectrometric instrument to obtain better accuracy of this affordable form of measurement of the iron content in separated heavy magnetic mineral concentrates. Changes were also made to the raw material mineral separation method in order to try to extract more of the iron, the aim being to generate a +62% Fe concentrate that can later be made into 100 kg bulk samples for supply to potential clients. It was found that using a 1200 Gauss magnet could more reliably produce such a concentrate, whereas using the stronger 2500 Gauss magnet separated additional coarsely ground particles that still contained much contaminant primary rock material, thus tending to lower the iron grade. 100 kg bulk samples of the +62% Fe concentrate were next passed repeatedly through WMG's pilot magnetic separator plant to assess likely product yield per machine if operations were scaled up to meet projected customer demand. However, it was found that yield amounts varied for repeated passes of the same bulk sample, often dropping to as low as 10% of the contained iron in the head fraction. Therefore it was concluded that the existing iron separation method was unreliable, and that using it to process raw materials gathered from over a large geographic area would prove uneconomic.
