Between 2008 and 2013, Iluka drilled a total of 45 vertical exploratory aircore holes on EL 3330/4546 for a total penetration of 1324.9 m, as part of reconnaissance drilling along traverses spaced 1 km apart with holes put in at 50 m intervals. Drilling was designed to test for possible economic detrital heavy mineral sands (HM) mineralisation in Tertiary sediments beneath the Nullarbor Plain to the south, south-east and north-west of the Tripitaka deposit, along the seaward side of the Eocene Ooldea Range. Only limited intercepts of interpreted marine strandline sands were made, and no significant mineralisation was intersected. The best intercept was 3 m @ 2.95% HM in hole YE10844 at a depth of 34.5 m: due to it being small and low grade, this occurrence was not followed up. During the last reported period, Doray Minerals collected samples of Iluka’s retained drill cuttings of basal Tertiary sands that came from its aircore holes on EL 5686, to submit for geochemical analysis of trace metals. However, the results were not sufficiently encouraging to warrant doing any further investigation. No work was done by either company on EL 5687 or its precursor tenements, since Iluka could not discern there any obvious geological and/or geomorphological features that required testing. EL 5686 and EL 5687 have now been deemed non-prospective for heavy minerals and for gold mineralisation, prompting the decision to surrender them.
