TARGET: Heavy minerals in beach sands and dunes. EXPLORATION: Hand auger drilling, heavy mineral analysis and mineralogy. RESULTS: A number of zircon, rutile and kyanite - bearing sand lenses were identified within the beach facies, but they are presently not economical to mine. Selective small-scale mining of the higher grade lenses was being considered. An investigation of the immediate offshore zone was latterly carried out via push-tube core sampling (69 samples taken), but the clay bottom was usually struck within 2 feet of the seabed, and no significant heavy mineral - bearing strata were intersected.
