Notes: Additional metadata for component reports: - Offshore Geochemical Survey EPP-18 - 5/83. Work completed in 1981 and 1982 has established EPP 18 as a prime petroleum prospect :- a 1600 km sniffer survey has located submarine oil seeps which are the apparent source of the stranded bitumens periodically washed onto nearby beaches.- new seismic work (1400 line km) has revealed a dozen deep Cretaceous folds, not apparent in earlier work. - Argonaut A1 was off structure, being located several miles down the NW flank of a Cretaceous fold. Phillips Australias Discovery Bay 1 test was drilled on a similar monocline. - the geochemistry of the stranded bitumens and of well cuttings and cores indicates mature Lower Cretaceous oil-prone source sediments in the area of oil seeps.- reconstruction of the geologic history suggests the accumulation of substantial oil reserves in large anticlinal structures at the close of Cretaceous time. Subsequent faulting has modified these structures and facilitated vertical migration to provide additional attractive prospects at shallower horizons - Preliminary Report of Sniffer Survey EPP 18 - South Australia May/June 1981. The survey included a sniffer, a high resolution sparker and a side scan sonar survey. Two large anomalies were detected which are more likely associated with oil than gas accumulations and appear to be associated with a mature source. Their lack of apparent repeatability suggest that the seeps are of an intermittant nature. Energy source: Sparker - 15 kJ. CDP coverage: 100%.> Recording mode: Analogue. 1164 km line of 1 channel. SP/VP interval: approximately 8 metres. Survey dates: 23.5.81 - 21.6.81. Geographic Locality: South-East Doc No: Env 04506
