Four scattered Iluka heavy mineral sands (HM) exploration licences located on the eastern margin of the Eucla Basin north of Ceduna have now been fully surrendered. On the basis of exploration conducted on them until late in 2017, this work being principally the drilling and sampling of 355 shallow vertical aircore holes for a total penetration of 22,776 m, they have been deemed as non-prospective for HM. On EL 5506 located near Penong, 6 holes for 360 m were drilled in 2015 to investigate Pleistocence Bridgewater Formation sands in the Bookabie Range. The upper part of the formation was intersected during the drilling, but no significant HM were found. On EL 4343/5536 (Area S) located on the Maralinga Tjarutja Lands ~60 km north of Barton Siding, 22 holes for 1109 m were drilled during the period 2010-2012 to test Eocene marine foreshore sands along part of the Barton Range. Localised HM were intersected in poorly sorted sands (?Hampton Sandstone) at depth beneath the scarp. Two rounds of follow-up drilling did not improve on spotty, thin high grade intercepts made in early reconnaissance holes. On EL 4344/5537 (Area T) located on the Maralinga Tjarutja Lands ~25 km north of Immarna Siding, 144 holes for 11,024 m were drilled during the period 2010-2013 also to test Eocene marine foreshore sands along part of the Ooldea Range. On EL 4345/5538 (Area U) located straddling the Trans Australia Railway route by ~ 10 km in width and extending for ~45 km eastwards from Ooldea Siding, 183 holes for 10,283 m were drilled during the period 2010-2013 also to test Eocene marine foreshore sands along part of the Ooldea Range. The latter two tenements were drill tested for HM mineralisation in two stratigraphic positions: (a) a position at the base of the Ooldea Range that is akin to the position of HM mineralisation at Jacinth-Ambrosia (the JA position), and (b) a position at a higher elevation akin to the position of HM mineralisation at Atacama (the Atacama position). No mineralisation was discovered in the JA position, and only low to medium grade, thin and discontinuous mineralisation occurred in the Atacama position. A body of HM mineralisation known as the 164 m strand was also intersected in an area that transects the southern boundary of EL 5538. This body is strand-like in its morphology, but is of low to medium grade, is small and is buried by 24 m of barren surface material, so therefore was deemed to be uneconomic.
