Further exploration of a radiometrically anomalous basinal area situated about 100 km east of Lake Frome, which is considered to be associated with the western flank of a sizeable Tertiary palaeochannel, has comprised open hole rotary drilling and wireline geophysical logging (31 holes, total 3080.5 m) on 5 traverses running approximately east-west, 5 km apart, along the interpreted palaeodrainage axis. Besides recording consistent above-background radiation from within the target basal Tertiary sands in these drillholes, a thin, more mineralised pyritic fine sand band was intersected over the upper Eyre Formation depth interval 26.3-27.8 m, which has been calculated to contain 0.57 lbs/short ton U3O8 equivalent. The latest drilling has enabled a more detailed picture to be drawn of the nature of the fill within the palaeochannel, including recognition of the presence of hardbars both at the top of the Cretaceous unit forming the channel base, and in thin sandy units within the overlying Tertiary channel sequence. Deep and widespread oxidation of these sediments is apparent, extending right down through the Tertiary and occasionally well into the underlying Cretaceous marine clays and claystones, thus suggesting that significant weathering occurred prior to Tertiary sedimentation. The morphology of the palaeochannel is now also better understood, although the model is still lacking in several critical details.
