TARGET: Sedimentary uranium roll-front orebodies within buried Early Tertiary palaeochannels underlying the Lake Frome Plains to the south and east of the Beverley deposit. EXPLORATION: 25 rotary drillholes totalling 14,696 feet were put down to intersect the prospective Eocene horizons in two known mineralized areas, where other holes had previously been drilled by Petromin under SML 502. One of the earlier holes, A1S1E, which was found to have intersected the thickest ore zone, was re-drilled and cored. All holes were geophysically logged with SP, resistivity and gamma ray probes. RESULTS: All drillholes were terminated below the potentially mineralized interval, in either Cainozoic or Mesozoic sediments. Seven holes showed radiometrically anomalous zones (240 to 1750 counts/second). It was concluded that uranium mineralisation occurs in localised pods which are not restricted to a particular Tertiary or Quaternary horizon. Disequilibrium of the radioactive mineral assemblage revealed by laboratory radiometric measurements performed on cores was considered likely to preclude the use of downhole radiometric methods to establish uranium grades, but this handicap may be restricted, depending on the results of further tests of mineralized material in drill cuttings and cores to determine the constancy of disequilibrium over the areas of interest. The prospectivity of the SML was confirmed, but more extensive investigations are considered necessary to identify economic accumulations of uranium ore.
